How does a starter work?
The main function of the engine starter is to convert the electrical energy of the battery into mechanical energy, thereby driving the engine flywheel to rotate to start the engine.
Before the engine can run under its own power, it must be rotated by an external force to transition the engine from a stationary state to a state where it can run on its own. The working principle of the starter is based on Ampere's law, which is the energy conversion process of an energized conductor under the force of a magnetic field. It contains components such as armature, commutator, magnetic poles, brushes, bearings and housings. The electromagnetic switch is a key part of the control circuit and is responsible for engaging the starter's clutch gear with the engine flywheel ring gear to start the engine. In addition, the transmission mechanism of the starter can automatically disengage the drive gear from the armature shaft after the engine is started to prevent the motor from overspeeding. This is an important safety function of the starter.
